Koh Samui Neighborhoods

15 distinct areas, each with its own character.

Chaweng

The main tourist hub of Koh Samui. Longest beach on the island with mega-clubs, shopping malls, and dense commercial activity. Loud, busy, and full of energy — the island's extroverted face.

Chaweng Noi

The quieter southern extension of Chaweng. Upscale resorts, hillside restaurants with panoramic views, and a more relaxed pace than its rowdy northern neighbor.

Lamai

The island's second-largest beach area. More laid-back than Chaweng with backpacker roots still visible. Vibrant but smaller-scale nightlife, good local food scene, and a strong sense of community.

Bophut & Fisherman's Village

A charming converted fishing village on the north coast. Boutique shops, excellent restaurants, and the famous Friday night walking street. The expat favorite for its balance of convenience and character.

Maenam

A long, quiet beach on the north coast. Budget-friendly with a strong local Thai community. Emerging as a digital nomad spot with good cafes and affordable monthly rentals.

Bang Po

The northwest coast. Very quiet and residential. Great for long stays with stunning sunset views across to Koh Phangan. Limited nightlife — and that's the whole point.

Nathon

The old port town and administrative center. Ferries to the mainland depart here. An authentic Thai town with local markets, government offices, and zero tourist pretense.

Lipa Noi

West coast. Quiet and residential with beautiful sunsets and Chinese heritage from the Hainan traders who arrived in the 1850s. Home to the Raja Ferry pier.

Taling Ngam

The southwest coast and the island's most tranquil area. Coconut plantations, small villages, and the heavy ancient calm of a place that tourism has barely touched. The island's spiritual core.

Hua Thanon

A Muslim fishing village on the southeast coast. Authentic and uncommercialized. The morning fish market is one of the most genuine local experiences on the island.

Choeng Mon

A small, upscale cape on the northeast. Family-friendly with a calm bay, shallow water, and a handful of excellent resorts. Quiet but not isolated.

Big Buddha & Plai Laem

The northeast, centered around the iconic 12-meter golden Big Buddha statue and the colorful Wat Plai Laem temple. A cultural landmark area that serves as the island's spiritual anchor.

Bang Rak

Between Bophut and Big Buddha. Mixed residential and commercial. Home to the pier for Koh Phangan ferries and a growing restaurant scene.

Laem Set & Laem Sor

The island's remote southern tip. A golden-tiled pagoda sits right on the beach. Barely touched by tourism, offering a silence and solitude almost impossible to find elsewhere on Samui.

Chaweng Lake & Inland

The interior behind Chaweng beach. Less scenic but highly practical — gyms, local restaurants, shops, and services at local prices. Where residents actually live and work.
